On this episode, Leslie Appleton-Young, Co-Founder of the WomanUP!® initiative and former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for the California Association of REALTORS®, and June Barlow, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the California Association of REALTORS®, discuss their journeys through pivotal moments in real estate history. This includes the 2007-08 financial crisis and the recent pandemic. They explore how REALTORS® adapted to these challenges, ultimately strengthening the industry.
With the angst and confusion in the air as August approaches, Leslie thought it would be helpful to remind ourselves how the industry reacted to previous “disruptions”. Think about the changes we have made regarding disclosure, agency/subagency, the short sale/foreclosure explosion following the financial crisis in 2009-12 and most recently keeping the market functioning under COVID. In every instance Realtors got to work, adapted and came out the other side stronger than ever.
Her guest is a dear friend and the perfect person to walk us through some of these challenging times. June Barlow is C.A.R.’s former General Counsel and during her 42 year career lived through these events first hand.
June Babiracki Barlow was the Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the California Association of Realtors® (C.A.R.), a statewide trade association with more than 200,000 members dedicated to the advancement of professionalism in real estate. Barlow joined C.A.R.’s Legal Department in 1980, becoming C.A.R.’s General Counsel in 1997. She retired in 2024.
June holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Mathematics from Brigham Young University and a Juris Doctorate from Brigham Young University, J. Reuben Clark Law School.
